Connective Tissue Grafts

There are a variety of ways we can improve a smile. One of the less common, but no less important or useful ways, is through connective tissue grafting. We use this grafting procedure when a patient’s gums have receded, moving the gum level down the tooth or teeth.

Gum recession, or gingival recession, is a fairly common occurrence. When the gums of your teeth recede far enough, it can negatively affect your smile. It can also lead to cold sensitivity and other problems.

We do not want our patients to have to deal with this issue. That is why we offer gum grafting solutions to correct gingival recession.

What Causes Gingival Recession?

Your gums are an important part of your smile. They connect the teeth to the surrounding bones of the upper and lower jaws. We don’t often think of our gums as parts of our mouth that need special attention, but in some instances, such as with gingival recession, gums are the main focus.

Gum recession can happen for any of the following reasons:

  • Periodontal Disease | When teeth become infected, so do the gums.
  • Poor Oral Hygiene | If you do not take good care of your mouth with good oral cleaning habits, your gums are going to suffer right along with your teeth.
  • Physical Wear | Brushing too hard or with a brush that has stiff bristles can be harmful to your gums.

How does Gum Grafting Work?

Gum grafting is a quick, comparatively easy procedure. When the gums of your forward-facing teeth reach a point that their recession is causing your smile to lose its usual vigor and glow, we can transfer some healthy tissue onto the worn-out areas.

The healthy gum tissue will be taken from the roof of your mouth and used to build up the receding tissue at the front of your mouth. This will result in a healthy, attractive gum line that accentuates your bright smile.
